You will probably read a lot of reviews of this camera that are rather dismissive of its look, feel, and feature set. And while I cannot defend the lack of a rubberized handgrip... spend any amount of time with this camera and you will find it simple, yet competent little DSLR which gets the most important thing right.

The camera has a glossy plastic finish which doesn't exactly exude quality or make it feel like a high-end camera. But construction on this camera is very tight. The plastic is light-weight but its not flimsy like you would expect. There is no rubberized handgrip, which I think was a mistake to omit this on this camera. Especially since its predecessor (and its competitors) have them. Outside of that, the hand grip is a very nice size. The one upshot to the lightweight plastic is that the camera feel very light with the kit lens attached.

One thing you have to watch out for is that the camera feels very out of balance when attaching a heavier lens... Read more

I think the camera is an amazing buy for the money. I was able to unpack the contents & begin shooting good pictures IMMEDIATELY, using the fully automatic settings & the included partially charged battery. You will however, need to supply an SD Card as this is not included, not even a small one.

The menu was a LITTLE confusing at first, but I quickly got the gist of things and am taking good pictures with the camera. Having used the full-auto settings and just dabbling with the advanced settings, I'm very pleased with the purchase and I think anyone who is either new to DSLR cameras or who doesn't want to spend over $1000 for a 'pro' or 'prosumer' DSLR will also be very happy with it right out of the box... or ANY of the T series cameras for that matter.

If you're going to be shooting in RAW (or like I do in RAW+L) I recommend getting AT LEAST a 16GB card, if not a 32GB card. The included battery is a champ. It lasts a good long time & charges quickly. I... Read more

I purchased this camera a few days ago and I've had nothing but FUN with it! Aside from my simple Kodak Easyshare point and shoot, I had a Canon EOS Elan 7 (35mm) and had been wanting to switch it over to Digital for several years. The longer I waited, the better the camera's got and more affordable they became.

I decided on the Canon T3 mostly because of the affordable price. (Nearly 1/2 of the T3i) I felt like I was getting a very good value for my money. I was right!

This camera takes amazing photo's! Clear, crisp, true color.
It's very easy to use, right out of the box.
Fit's all my old lenses and the remote from the Elan 7
All the advanced manual settings I could want topped with the instant gratification of seeing how the settings affect the picture instantly.

This camera allows you to use live screen shooting which so many people like these days and it takes HD video.

The Canon Rebel T3i takes the consumer level dSLR a couple steps closer to the mid-level Canon 60D with the addition of the rotating rear LCD screen, remote flash firing, and in-camera processing features. I am a Nikon owner for years now trying to switch to Canon. After receiving this camera for a few days, I can now give a list of the differences between this T3i and the Nikon counterpart D5100.

1. T3i has 4 buttons on the back defined to be used to control "AF", "White Balance", "Drive Mode", and "Picture Control", plus a dedicated ISO button on the shoulder, and a focus point selector on the top right corner of the back, which is great, and also the main reason I am trying to switch to Canon. For D5100, you have to go deep into the menu.

2. T3i can trigger external flash, D5100 can't.

3. T3i has White Balance Shifts with the Custom White Balance, Nikon D5100 Customer White Balance is a one shot setup.

4. T3i's image quality seems to be a little better than D5100. Especially the LCD is brighter and looks great.

5. T3i can work with any Canon lens, D5100 only works with AF-S lenses due to the lack of a body motor.

I received this camera out of the blue as a Christmas/Graduation gift. I had just received a Canon Powershot in September and loved that camera, but when I got this one. WOW....JUST WOW.


I absolutely love this camera, and I am so happy I finally own a DLSR. I love being able to have more control over images, holding this camera feels natural, and I like that you can buy accessories and lenses for this versus your regular point and shoot digital cameras. For a first DLSR, I highly recommend this.


The only thing I wish it had was a preview feature like you have on point and shoots (I'm not sure what you'd call that feature but you can see your image through the eyepiece and on the screen before you take it). Otherwise, I love it and am having a fun time taking pictures with it and learning all the other features it has!

I am by no means a professional but when I wanted my first DSLR camera I did a lot of research and ended up making the D40 my choice. My original choice was first the D80, then I changed to the D200, but when my husband thought the prices were too much for a toy, I reevaluated and chose the D40 for it's performance and price. I mainly used [...] as my research site, and he was a great help. I have always used Canon, but when I decided on a DSLR, I wanted Nikon. I don't feel like the transition was too hard- especially since this was my first SLR. It takes a bit of time to learn and patience to get your manual settings right, but when you need a quick fix, the "P"(program) setting works great. For a first time SLR, I think this was a great choice, and the lens that comes with the kit is great.

This camera is just great. If you are not a pro, and you want a high quality, inexpensive camera, then this DSLR is for you.






I bought this camera about 2 months ago. I just love it. It is easy to carry everywhere, and takes great pictures. You do not need a moving screen at the back of the camera. You don't need to take video - as the shutter will open up and allow all the dust get on your sensor!!!!!!!





If you think you need all the buttons of a D300 camera, then you need a D300. Although the d40 menue includes the majority of the features of more expensive camera, these might not be accesible by pushing a button like on D300/D90... but have to go two steps into the menu...





For this reason, I am not going to take any points off... because D40 has its own quality, by keeping it easier to use... and easy to access... and easy to carry around...





Great Product!!! I am using the nikon lenses: 18-55mm, 35mm f/1.8, and 70-300mm.

This is a nice simple little starter camera. Decent controls. For about $400 with the lens, I think it's a great deal. 6MP is more than sufficient. Biggest drawback is the limited number of Nikon lens it can use. But love the fact that it can sync flash at even 1/1000s!

I knew I wanted a DSLR and after a few months of debate, I decided to go for the D3000. I was tempted to buy a used D40 but the improvements made to the D3000 were hard to ignore. I ended up buying the D3000 in a bundle on Black Friday which saved me about 150 dollars! As a college students, I was beyond happy to save the money.






The features include almost anything I need (there's only one feature missing: a color selection tool that my dad's Canon has but the D3000 doesn't) and the portability is incredible. I am still in shock about how light the camera is.





For a beginner like me, having the D3000 with an extra telephoto lens is perfect for learning the ropes and hopefully taking a photography class with. I highly recommend this for beginners and perhaps intermediate photographers. Advanced and professionals photographers probably would require more heavy duty equipment.

1. User FRIENDLY, GUIDE MODE IS A MUST! The whole camera is FILLED with tips and EXAMPLES and settings of what to do and how to achieve such and such. Guide mode holds your hand for newbies to give you an idea of whats what, i love how the Nikon D3000 is Half a book and All camera! Thanks Nikon for making such a great quality camera.









2. Takes Great pictures, as an entry level dslr it takes great pictures but i think its the same sensor as the d60 just with 11 points of focus , the 11 point focus is definitely useful, theres more areas for your subject to be in, and Depth of field pictures are definitely easier to do with more focus points.











The Nikon d3000 with the 18-55mm lens is perfect for everyday use but not enough, i suggest it should be complimented with a 55-200mm, because sometimes you cannot get close enough to the subject without getting in the way of the people around you!





The Screen is big and wide and perfect for reviewing images and looking at settings, you dont have to look hard. The settings do get washed out in direct sunlight so try to keep it in your shadow





Also post processing of pictures comes out AWESOME!!! i could not believe the level of detail i saw on my computer, it wasnt blurry and zooming in is really pixel squares.





Nice camera for beginners, if your novice or pro this camera isnt for you, while a newbie like me appreciate the tips it does take a while to get around the settings but you get used to it, there is no quick access to any 1 setting but soon your fingers will be faster than any other photographer, once you get used to all the navigating.









ALSO this is a camera where you can customize the background of your screen! you can have a wallpaper of a picture or change the color.





I hope this is a comprehensive review that will satisfy you into buying the camera :D

Both camera companies have five letters in their titles, however, only one company has a Wow! -- Nikon. I purchased a Canon PowerShot two years ago and thought that I was royalty. Well, that was then; this is now. With the Nikon D3000, I am king of the world.






My brother gave me the Nikon D3000 for Christmas.





It's virtually impossible to take a bad photo with the Nikon D3000. I am impressed with the Retouch features that will make a photo brighter, take out any red eye, do a color balance to your perfection (remember, the purple color of a lilac is just about impossible to capture but you can get that defined color with the color balance feature on the Nikon D3000), or trim a photo to take out any unwanted scenery or subjects.





I took photos of my Christmas tree at night and the pictures are spectacular and the multi-color lights cast their hues to their true colors.





Sure, there is the competition that gives you 19 scene modes, but really, the only two you need are Auto and Auto no flash. If you are at a fireworks display or at an aquarium, the auto no flash is all you need.





Who wants a movie mode with a camera? I have a Sony HD camcorder that takes 1080P movies and I know there is no camera on the market that can take superior movies like the HD camcorder. When cameras supply a movie mode, something in relation to picture quality is going to be sacrificed.





Who needs Live View? When you are outside in the bright sun, you can't see the image on the LCD screen while shooting.






People pay for gingerbread....I want a great camera, instead.





This Nikon D3000 is the best camera I have ever owned.





This camera is so good that the President would consider hiring me to be his personal photographer.

 "Canon XSi great for recreational photos, not a workhorse." 2010-01-05

We received a couple of new Canon XSi Digital rebels for crime scene work. Right out of the box one of them had battery issues. Last night at a homicide scene in sub freezing temps mine completely crashed. The associated speedlight couldn't communicate with the camera resulting in underexposed, blurry night pictures. Then the camera began shutting down intermittently. I had to put it back in the car for several minutes until it began to operate again. Finally, after over an hour of annoying, unannounced shutdowns it started doing what it's supposed to. The pictures it takes are nothing short of spectacular. I love the design and the interface. Overall a great camera. I'm afraid, however I will have to stick with my erstwhile Canon S2is. It may have fewer megapixels and tons of scratches and scars but it always turns on and takes pictures no matter what. Canon makes great cameras. They dropped the ball on these.

I am a pro shooter who got this camera to use for fun and trips were i would be mad if i damaged my high end $$$ body.(like skiing) Any way i love the camera so far. I have not had the problems that i have read about with the auto focus or image quality. You however can not take this camera out of the box and get the best pictures it can take. they will be ok but you need to take the time and set up your camera. READ the book if you dont know what your doing. I got the kit camera with the 18-55 IS lens and it is ok. The camera takes much better pictures with my 35-350 72mm L lens on it, as will any camera, spend your money on the glass not the body.






If you want a good camera for the price this is the one for you. If you have older EOS cameras your old lenses will work with the new camera. I also use my 430EZ flash that is from my A2 EOS film camera, it is way over powering in the auto mode (as it is not a E-TTL flash only a TTL) but it works if you manual set it, for inside i use 1/16 or 1/32 (up to 10-15 feet works great) out side i set it to full power and i can light up a subject 100 feet away! (it is great for that)





If you have used a EOS before this works about the same. even from my old film EOS to this one, the basic-mid advance functions are the same.





BEWARE were you but from online. do not buy from a company who dose not have a good reviews (reviews not rating, and read the bad ones too). Personally i will not buy from 17st photo out of NY, to many nightmare stories . i try to buy from amazon directly and will do a lot of review reading if my item is supplied by anyone other than them. Spend a few extra $$ to make sure you can send it back it their are any problems. you will get what you pay for.

This camera is a great digital SLR for the price.





Coming from regular point and shoot Canons and Sony around 7MP, this camera blows them away in image quality and is just as easy to use as the point and shoots.






Make sure to invest in quality UV or other quality lens protection depending on your intended use for the camera.





Also, getting the higher zoom lens is a must-have with this camera, although most of your pictures will be taken in the 18-55 range with the lens that comes with the camera.





Only thing that could improve on this camera would be to be able to see the picture on the LCD before shooting(like a point and shoot), but I suppose that defeats the whole digital SLR camera's history and function.

I took photography in college many, many years ago and decided recently that I wanted to start taking quality photographs again so I bought the Canon Rebel based on advice of a professional photographer. I have not been disappointed. If you want to point and shoot the automatic features will allow you to do that. If you don't, but want to make the adjustments yourself (the way it used to be done) then you can do that as well. If the latter, the instruction book is very clear on how to do that even if you don't know about f stops, shutter and film speed. The other features are amazing and I am really looking forward to using some of the advanced features. So far, this has turned out to be a great purchase.
